What Flying Standby Taught Me About the Power of Style
How I learned to dress like I belong and why it still matters every time I travel.
— By Yo Taylor
Before I ever picked up a styling client, I had a classroom. It was 30,000 feet in the air, and the lesson was this: how you show up determines what doors open for you.
I spent years as an international flight attendant. That career shaped everything I know about style — not fashion, but style. The kind that travels with you. The kind that speaks before you open your mouth.
The Standby Rules Nobody Tells You
When you fly standby as a crew member, you learn something fast: availability doesn’t guarantee the seat you want. If first class was open, it was yours but only if you looked the part. Back in those days, that meant being dressed up. No exceptions. Pantyhose, even in coach. A put-together look from head to toe.
I’ll be honest with you — when I was younger, I thought it was a little unnecessary. A little much. I was just trying to get from point A to point B.
But here’s what I came to understand: it was never about the clothes. It was about signaling. It was about communicating — without saying a single word — that you belong in the space you’re walking into.
The Moment That Changed Everything
Years later, I was traveling as a passenger — still a flight attendant at the time, so dressing well was already second nature to me. There was a mix-up with my seat. My business class booking somehow got tangled in the system, and for a moment, it wasn’t clear what was going to happen.
Then I overheard two of the agents at the gate. They were looking in my direction. One said to the other, “She looks like she normally sits in business class.”
At the ticket counter and gate, where quick decisions are made about seat mix-ups, upgrades, and accommodations, it was how I presented myself that smoothed everything over. There was no argument. No hassle. My seat was honored, the situation was resolved, and I walked onto that plane without a second glance.
It wasn’t luck. It was style — doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.
What This Has to Do With Your Summer Vacation
I know what you might be thinking: “I just want to be comfortable. I’m on vacation.”
I hear you. And I’m not asking you to fly in heels. What I am telling you is this: travel is one of those moments where the world makes quick decisions about you. At check-in. In the terminal. At your destination. People are reading you before you ever say a word.
And for us — women over 40 and 50 — travel style is also about how we feel in our own skin. There is nothing more powerful than stepping off a plane and feeling like yourself. Feeling ready. Feeling like you arrived.
My Go-To Travel Style Principles (Learned at 30,000 Feet)
1. Dress with intention, not just convenience.
Comfort and polish are not opposites. A well-fitted knit trouser, a sleek pair of leggings, or even coordinated athletic wear can all work beautifully for travel — as long as it’s intentional. Think a matching set in a solid color, a fitted jogger with a structured zip-up, or activewear that looks like you chose it on purpose.

The key word is coordinated. There is a real difference between looking actively styled and throwing on a random sweatshirt with mismatched sweats. One says you’re a woman on the move. The other says you rolled out of bed. You can be warm, comfortable, and completely put together all at once.
2. Pack pieces that talk to each other.
My flight attendant training gave me an eye for a capsule. Every piece should work with at least two others. Neutrals anchor the bag; one or two statement pieces give you your personality. That’s all you need.

3. Keep your accessories light, fine, and security-friendly.
This is one of my favorite travel style secrets: choose sterling silver or fine jewelry over chunky statement pieces. The reason is practical and powerful — fine metals and small jewelry won’t set off the security alarm.
No stopping, no waving, no going back through the scanner. You move through the checkpoint smoothly and quickly, and you still arrive at your gate looking polished and put together. A delicate necklace, a simple cuff, quality earrings. Elegant, intentional, and completely security-friendly.
4. Layer for the plane, land ready to shed it.
Planes are cold. Full stop. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Dress knowing there are no blankets and the AC is not in your control. A lightweight layer — a linen blazer, a soft wrap, a long cardigan — keeps you warm on board and stylish when you land.
Pair it with a sandal or a slip-on shoe that packs flat in your carry-on. You want to be warm in the air and ready to go the moment your feet hit the ground.
5. Pack one ‘hit the ground running’ outfit in your carry-on.
Heaven forbid your luggage doesn’t arrive when you do — but it happens. So here’s my rule: always pack at least one complete outfit and a bathing suit in your carry-on. A fantastic sundress, your cutest sandals, a bathing suit, your sunscreen, and your full skincare routine in travel sizes. Cleanser, moisturizer, SPF — everything you need to take care of your skin that night and wake up the next morning feeling like yourself.
That’s your insurance policy. When you step off that plane, you can hit the ground running. And by the next day, you are completely ready — rested, cared for, and not spending a single unnecessary dollar replacing what you already had. You are already set to go.
6. Style is a form of self-respect and it’s seen.
This is the one that took me the longest to teach my younger self. When you take care in how you present yourself, people feel it. You feel it. Doors open differently. Situations resolve more gracefully. I’ve lived it.

I didn’t know it at the time, but every flight I worked and every standby trip I took was training me for the life I have now. The life I coach other women into. Style isn’t about vanity. It’s about showing up as the fullest version of yourself — wherever you’re headed.

So this summer, pack with purpose. Travel in your power. And remember: wherever you arrive, you already belong there.
With Love,
Yo Taylor
