Hey, beautiful! Let’s talk about something near and dear to our hearts—our hair. You know how it goes: one day you’re rocking that sleek, straight look, and the next, you’re contemplating letting those natural curls take over. Whether you’re transitioning from relaxers to natural hair, embracing your grays, or just considering a big chop, your hair has the power to transform not just your look, but your entire vibe. And trust me, as a wardrobe stylist, I’ve seen how a change in hairstyle can completely alter your style game.
So, here’s a bit of my own hair story. At 18, I was thrilled when my mother finally let me get a relaxer. From then on, every eight weeks like clockwork, I was at the salon for my retouch—faithfully—for decades. But when I hit 50, I decided it was time for a change. I wanted to go natural. With the help of my fabulous hairstylist, Tia Richardson, I made the transition without even having to cut my hair, thanks to some keratin magic.
For years, my relaxed hair was part of who I was—it was my comfort zone. But now, as the keratin has faded, I’m stepping into a new chapter: going completely natural, no chemicals, no heat. Let me tell you, this natural hair is thick and it’s hot! For me, it’s a whole new experience, especially when those hot flashes kick in. My hair affects everything from what I wear to how I style myself each day.
This brings me to a point I always stress with my clients: when you change your hairstyle, it doesn’t just change how you look; it changes how you feel and what you choose to wear. Take gray hair, for instance. I’m not quite there yet—my gray is still patchy, and I’m not ready to rock the Dalmatian look just yet! But I absolutely adore women who go fully gray. It’s stunning, and it often brings out a whole new side of their personality. Some women even find themselves feeling sexier, more confident, and powerful with gray hair. And that shift is reflected in their wardrobe choices—they start wearing different colors, bolder styles, and they carry themselves with a new kind of energy.
And what about a new haircut? I’ve seen women get a fresh, chic cut and suddenly feel like a brand-new person—free, empowered, and ready to take on the world. That’s the power of a good hairstyle—it can redefine your whole look and make you feel like your most fabulous self.
As for me, I’m navigating my natural hair journey with all its ups and downs, but I’m loving every minute of it. And I’m curious—what about you? Have you changed your hairstyle recently? Maybe you’ve done the big chop and are excited about how it’s going to change your style. I’d love to hear your hair journey in the comments.
Remember, your hair is an extension of your style, your personality, and your power. Embrace the changes, experiment with new looks, and most importantly, have fun with it!
